Supplements are Supplemental. Do it wisely.

Food for thought on supplementation:

Dont take Vitamin E in the alpha tocopherol form by itself, it is out of balance and depletes the other forms of vitamin E and makes it a negative.

Magnesium is far more important to supplement than Calcium, most people are magnesium deficient. Low magnesium causes calcium to accumulate in the soft tissues.. not good. People have been talking about the 2:1 ratio of calcium to mag.. Thats bullshit. Take magnesium by itself at night, it will help you sleep and help your muscles recover faster. I dont take a calcium supplement at all.

B complex vitamins are best in the activated forms, Swanson makes a nice supplement of activated B complex.  This is especially helpful for those with MTHFR defects.

Selenium is important for a great deal of things, especially your thyroid function, converting T4 to the active T3 is part of its job.  Methionine bound selenium is a good way to go, better yet is to eat Brazil nuts, the richest selenium source on earth.

Sulfur is important to joint and nervous system health, skin, etc.. way off most peoples radar, but super important. Eggs, beans, protein foods.

Iodine is important to thyroid, nervous system, immune, and other things. Its also great against fungus and fungal infections.

Most people will benefit from a high quaility multi mineral formula far more then a cheap synthetic multivitamin, (I dont take those)

Molybdenum is often overlooked.. eat chickpeas, and beans. Molybdenum is needed to handle sulfur.

Vitamins cant replace foods, science is still discovering things in foods that are beneficial and putting those things in pills, however those things were already in the foods to begin with. Tomatos have always had lycopene long before anyone knew or cared what lycopene was... eat the foods!

If you supplement do it wisely.

A health topic. Vitamin D. For years doctors have told people to avoid the sun, and as a result doctors are far busier, and people are way sicker. A quick introduction to vitamin d. First off, its not a vitamin, its a hormone, made when sun hits the skin causing a chemical process involving cholesterol, and UVB rays and sulfur. The result is cholecalciferol, a steroid hormone, when it gets to the liver it is further converted, but all the other stuff is really not that important. Here is what is important. 2000 genes are activated by Vitamin D... 2000!!! Elderly patients given vitamin D had decreased mortality from all causes!!! I personally have advocated judicious use of vitamin d supplements for the last 10+ years, however, I think it is important to know that supplementation is not as good as actual sun. That is right, that fiery thing in the sky that humans have adapted too over a very long time is still essential to health. I dont think its a mistake that God made making our skin photo reactive, I do think it is a tremendous mistake to tell people to:

1. avoid the sun
2. use sunscreen all the time
3. have the mindset that the sun is bad for you.

The story of these mice. The two top mice are 4.5 months old, while the lower are 8.5 months old. The mice on the left are vitamin d deficient.

these two factors will lead to low Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D, this makes you more susceptible to a wide variety disease states because your body needs vitamin d to function properly. I used to dose my kids with vitamin d before athletic competitions. I dont do it anymore. They do it themselves now, I have to hunt down the vitamin D pills because they feel the benefits of it. It improves muscular strength, nervous system function, immune health, bone health, cardiovascular health... everything.. The supplement I recommend is Bio Tech D3. I use the 50,000 unit dose weekly or every 10 days in winter and almost not at all during the summer or sunnier months.. Warning, the first time you take this you will feel strangely good and energetic and possibly unable to sleep.. Take it in the morning.. get a blood test... Serum 25, levels should be between 40-60... yes if you look it up they will disagree, my levels are for optimum health.. the USRDA is so incredibly low, it will only prevent rickets.. Also dont take D2, only take D3, and if your doctor is prescribing D2, stop taking it and switch to D3... but Sun is best.. the added benefit comes from the Sun and the sulfated form of vitamin d that is water soluable. Sun will also cause your cholesterol levels will go down if you care about that sort of thing.

Your body also needs sulfur. both sulfur and cholesterol protect your skin during sun exposure and prevent cancer.. eat these foods :eggs, legumes, garlic, onions, brussel sprouts, asparagus, kale, wheat germ.

never take calcium without vitamin D, and magnesium. D3 is far more important to bone health then calcium! This post is getting long. Oh yeah, ALL AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES BENEFIT FROM PROPER VITAMIN D LEVELS!

Big News for Autism.

A very telling article that speaks to the heart of the autism explosion in this country. 1 in 88 infants born in this county are now showing signs of autism or the autism spectrum.

In this article infant primates were vaccinated with similar doses to infant humans, and many developed autism like symptoms.

http://vran.org/in-the-news/infant-monkeys-given-standard-doses-of-vaccines-develop-autism-symptoms/

This issue is a very heart breaking story for parents who were told, vaccines were safe and effective, and the possible side affects were always greatly underscored.

Many of the common childhood illnesses, measles, mumps, rubella and pertussis were common back in the "old days". Ask any person in their late 70s or early 80s and they will tell you that they had most or all of these sicknesses.

Now there are vaccines for all these illnesses plus, diptheria, tetanus, HIB, chicken pox and new to the list is a very controversial vaccine for sexually transmitted diseases called Gardisil.

Chicken pox was a right of passage for many families, parties were held to get all the neighborhood kids to get chicken pox so everyone could get it and be done at the same time, now a vaccine exists to stop parents from missing work with a sick kid. Oh yeah and it might prevent chicken pox, or does it?

My oldest son, now 16, was in class with 23 other children in 2nd grade when an epidemic of chicken pox swept through the class. 11 of his fellow classmates, all vaccinated, contracted chicken pox, my son, who was not vaccinated never got the chicken pox. We were hoping he would!

Parents please make careful plans about vaccination, and the vaccination schedules laid out for you.

"The group’s request for research echoes that of Dr. Bernadine Healy, Former NIH Director, in a CBS interview earlier this week. She asserted that public health officials have been too quick to dismiss an autism-vaccine connection when the research has been insufficient. The government recently conceded a federal vaccine court case which agreed that a child regressed into autism as a result of 9 vaccines given on one day."

9 vaccines!!! Your immune system is not equipped for that sort of attack. Take every precaution, do your research and most importantly, say no when you are uncomfortable. In the state of Pennsylvania for example, a philosophical exemption to vaccination is available and your child CAN go to public school. Other states have similar provisions.

The notion that a vaccine can be dangerous is important, millions of people cannot be expected to react identically to anything injected into them. This is logical, and to disagree with this notion is simply disingenuous.

Vitamin D: A new old, phenomenon

For about 12 years I have been preaching to my patients about vitamin d, make sure you take vitamin d or get in the sun.

Why, because your body requires it, and there are highly evolved mechanisms created over thousands of generations to syntheize vitamin D from sun exposure. So why would the body go through such trememdous biochemical cartwheels? Something really important must be going on.

First, the US RDA for vitamin D is 400iu, enough to prevent rickets, but this thinking was in place years ago, without a full understanding of what roles vitamin d plays in the body besides calcium absorption.

Now the medical community has embraced some of the amazing findings that have surfaced over the last several years including vitamin d's role in the nervous system, immune system, endocrine system and musculoskeletal system.

Blood test can now measure vitamin d levels. People with auto immune diseases or people who just plain dont want to have auto-immune diseases need to monitor vitamin d. The major hurdle with vitamin d was the alleged toxicity. In comparison Tylenol is thousands of times more toxic, so we need to first get the truth out about what we are dealing with. Patients often balk at taking such a large sounding number. A caucasian person can synthesize 20,000 iu of vitamin D in about 20minutes of sun exposure. Supplementing 4-5000iu is not a big dose. I recommend some folks take 50,000iu for a few days to raise their levels and then a maintenance dose to keep their levels in the optimum zone.

I have used 50,000iu to 100,000 iu dosages myself and with my family for many years safely and effectively, and the only downside is the energy that comes from taking it too late in the day and not being able to sleep.

Now everyone is on the bandwagon, and medical doctors frequently prescribe vitamin d, although the typical prescription is for ergocalcifol or vitamin D2. To put it bluntly, this is the wrong nutrient, and I dont care who prescribes it. The proper compound is vitamin D-3 cholecalciferol, which is the natural and much for effective supplement.

D-3 is superior is raising blood levels and is the compound familiar to your body. Its not a prescription, thus the D2 alternative arose. This is more about money and less about common sense.

I recommend Bio Tech vitamin D-3, in the 50,000iu dose. I have used it with hundreds of patients, and I find it to be a must have in my regimen. I seldom recommend specific companies, so that should be something to think about. Have bloodwork done to monitor your vitamin d levels.

male ness... lost

A phenomenon is occurring among the male population, they are in essence becoming more feminine, not because of emasculating TV personalities but due to the affects of estrogenic hormones in the environment.

Xenoestrogens are those chemicals that have estrogenic properties in the body but are not part of normal hormone metabolism.

Here is a well written article and a list about Xenoestrogens.
http://http://endojourney.wordpress.com/2009/07/31/a-list-of-xenoestrogens/

One important thing to note is that many cancers in men and women are estrogen driven. Men develop prostate issues from estrogen and DHT.

High estrogen levels in men contribute to erectile dysfunction, a general softening of the body and accumulation of excess body fat, which in turn further exacerbates the problem.

For men nutritional supplement such as zinc and boron are helpful in mitigating these issues. Nutritional biochemicals such as di-indole methane and indole 3 carbinol both of which are found in broccolli have estrogen modifying properties.

You can also use a compound known as chrysin applied directly through the skin, since absorption is a problem taken orally.

There are a handful of other helpful things to do including calcium d glucarate, nettle root ect that help to maintain a more healthy hormonal balance.

The endocrine system is a chemical ballet that needs to be in balance to serve a person properly. Certain seeminly benign practices such as using a body wash with progestins or estogens in it may be enough to change a persons endocrine system negatively.

Think twice about the chemicals in the world around you.

optimum health

I thought it would be conveinant for friends, family and patients to have an open forum about todays health challenges.

I think we are on a precipice of a health tsunami.

The explosion of childhood illnesses : ADD, ADHD, Autism, auto immune diseases and diabetes has made the simple way to handle the family's health a good bit different then it was just a few short years ago.

There are critical components of health that all families need to know about. There are enormous amounts of data about simple strategies that dramatically improve health, sadly most people have never heard of them, and are even less likely to come across this information on a daily basis.
